A practical starting point

Choose the question
before the test.

PFAS testing approaches measure different things. The useful choice depends on the material, the intended decision and the evidence you need.

01 / Targeted analysis

Which compounds are present?

Targeted methods measure a defined list of PFAS. Ask for the full analyte list and material-specific reporting limits. A non-detect for that panel does not establish the absence of every PFAS, including polymers.

02 / Fluorine screening

How much fluorine is measured?

Total, organic, extractable and adsorbable fluorine are different measurands. Fluorine can come from PFAS and other sources. Ask how the sample is prepared and how the result is expressed.

03 / Precursor approaches

What could a targeted panel miss?

Precursor assays can provide additional information after oxidation. Recovery and conversion depend on the method and matrix. They are not interchangeable with a complete measurement of all PFAS.

04 / Exact scope

What is actually accredited?

Match the legal entity, performing site, material, analytes and method revision to the current scope. A general ISO/IEC 17025 statement does not cover every service. Flexible scopes can require a current detailed method list.

Send a clear project brief

  1. Identify the packaging material, coating, layers and destination market.
  2. State the test objective or customer specification and required reporting limits.
  3. Ask how to obtain a representative sample and how much material to send.
  4. Confirm the performing site, accreditation status and any subcontracted work.
  5. Obtain an itemised quotation, timing basis, shipment instructions and written project acceptance.

Keep the regulatory question specific

Requirements differ by jurisdiction, material and intended use. EU packaging requirements, Great Britain and Northern Ireland must not be treated as one identical rule. Screening for elemental fluorine and measuring individual PFAS also answer different analytical questions.

Use the official texts and ask the laboratory how its proposed test plan answers your specific question. This directory retains a research check date of 24 October 2026.
